Lennox Lewis breaks down Anthony Joshua's win over Andy Ruiz Jr

Anthony Joshua defeated Andy Ruiz Jr on points on Saturday night after the fight lasted the full 12 rounds.

Joshua lost his WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO world heavyweight belts to Ruiz back in June, but got revenge in the rematch and reclaimed them, all as well as earning the title of being a two-time World Champion.

Former boxer Lennox Lewis reckons AJ did very well to resist the urge to purely go for blood in Saturday’s fight, and was actually complimentary about the Brit.

Lennox claimed, as per The Metro: “I understand that [people] want blood… but, as a fighter, you have to be disciplined enough to wait for the opportunities to open up.

“Sometimes they don’t come. When that happens you play it safe and stick to game plan.”

The new game plan certainly looked to have worked for AJ as he came away with point totals across the scoreboards of 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110.

Joshua had slimmed down to under 17 stone for the rematch and spent a majority of the fight boxing around the outside of the ring opposed to the centre of the ring.

It was the centre-ring that appeared to be AJ’s downfall in the first fight against Ruiz Jr back in June.

It was also only the second time in Joshua’s career that the result had been decided via points. The scorecards decision disappointed fans as they were hoping to see a strong reaction from AJ and wanted to see him with via knockout.

It did look as though it might have ended this way too as AJ opened up a cut just above Ruiz Jr’s left eye in the first round.

Lewis, however, was full of praise in which AJ handled the contest and was pleased with manner in which he won.

He said: “Every fight isn’t going to be a KO. I thought AJ fought a good tactical and didn’t fall into the trap of trying to mix it up in exchanges.

“This was a good addition to his experience. He also wisely unpacked his jab for this one.”
