Judge Declares Prostitution Is Not A Crime In Nigeria After Ruling In Favour Of 16 Girls

Abuja-based judge Justice Binta at the High Court has ruled that prostitution is not a crime in Nigeria.

The ground-breaking ruling took place on Thursday at the Abuja High Court.

According to Justice Binta Nyako, there is no law in the Nigerian constitution that prohibit prostitution or declares it as a crime.
The has therefore awarded damages to 16 girls who were arrested since 2017 for being s*x workers.

Speaking to BBC, the defendants’ lawyer Babatunde Jacob noted that the court upheld the security agents violated the rights of the girls when they raided their homes to arrest them as prostitutes.

The ruling is causing buzzes on Twitter; people are sharing various opinions with some fearing it could cause crises in the most populated African country.
