President Donald Trump has claimed he has prevented a third world war from breaking out, commenting that his relationship with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un had maintained world peace.
Speaking on Tuesday morning during a three-day visit to the U.K. for the NATO summit, the president said that if people had listened to former President Barack Obama "we'd be in World War 3 right now."
Discussing the North Korean leader, Trump said: "I have confidence in him. I like him, he likes me, we have a good relationship. We'll see what happens. He definitely likes sending rockets up, doesn't he? That's why I call him Rocket Man. But we have a very good relationship and we'll see what happens. It may work out, it may not, but in the meantime it's been a long time.
"President Obama said it's the number one problem and it would've been war. You'd be in a war right now if it weren't for me."
Pressed on whether North Korea had continued with its nuclear program and missile testing, the president responded: "Well, you don't know that. Number one, you don't know that. And number two, very importantly, I have met and in the meantime we still have peace. We have peace.
"And at least speaking for myself I have a very good personal relationship and he has with me. I'm possibly the only one he has that kind of relationship with in the world. They call it the Hermit Kingdom. I know a lot about his hermit kingdom. But I have a very good relationship. If you would've listened to President Obama, we'd be in World War 3 right now."
The White House did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.
Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to visit North Korea when he crossed into the North Korean side of the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea back in June for a meeting with Kim, which both leaders described in positive terms.
In this regard, the president has managed to make significant progress with the isolated nation where former presidents have failed to achieve their aims. However, there has been scant progress on denuclearization talks, which must take place by year-end according to a deadline imposed by Kim.
The amiable relationship that Trump claims the pair now enjoy came following months of blustering and threats in which both leaders threatened attacks.
"North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the 'Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times,'" Trump said in a tweet in January 2018. "Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"
The leaders have since met on three occasions but tensions are once again rising as the slated deadline is looming—with North Korea commenting today that the ball is in the American's court.
"The dialogue touted by the U.S. is, in essence, nothing but a foolish trick hatched to keep the DPRK bound to dialogue and use it in favor of the political situation and election in the U.S.," North Korean vice foreign minister Ri Thae Song said according to state media, The Press Association reported.
"What is left to be done now is the U.S. option and it is entirely up to the U.S. what Christmas gift it will select to get."
