2022 W/Cup qualifiers: Super Eagles among top seeded teams

2022 W/Cup qualifiers:

The Super Eagles’ road to 2022 FIFA World Cup has been made smoother following the seeding of the three-time African champions in Pot 1 of the qualifiers ahead of the main draws on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, in Cairo, Egypt.

This is a result of the latest FIFA ranking which put Nigeria as the 31st best playing nation in the world as well as third best in Africa.

Following the seeding, Nigeria will avoid other African heavyweights as Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and bitter rivals, Ghana and Cameroon during the qualifying series.

Since their FIFA World Cup debut in 1994, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for six of the last seven FIFA World Cups, missing only the 2006 edition and have reached the Round-of-16 three times.
Nigeria has been seeded alongside Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, Mali, and DR Congo in Pot 1.

In Pot 2, it is Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, S/Africa, Guinea, Uganda, Cape Verde, Gabon, Benin, Zambia and Congo.

In Pot 3, Madagascar have been seeded alongside Mauritania, Libya, Mozambique, Kenya, Central Africa, Zimbabwe, Niger, Namibia and Guinea-Bissau.

In Pot 4, it is Malawi, Angola, Togo, Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Liberia and Djibouti.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to hold in Qatar from 21st of November to 18th of December which is a sharp departure from the June-July cycle.

This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim-majority country.
