We need Obasanjo Not Buhari, PDP not APC

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola once said that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who had a rare opportunity to lead the nation three times, first as Military Head of State in the late 70s and twice elected president from 1999 to 2007, was known to him to be “a very energetic, strong-willed, and stubborn person.” hence, he is difficult to persuade, but he is a progressive man. He never became a professor but he knows better than most professors". He is a highly talented man and he is the best president in Nigeria of all time.

Obasanjo reformed agriculture with the ‘Operation Feed the Nation’ programme, he was the first Nigerian head of state to hand-over power willingly and hosted FESTAC 77, the largest cultural event ever held on the African Continent. He built Warri refinery and Murtala Mohammed International Airport, set up the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and introduced Universal Free Primary Education (UPE). He inaugurated the constituent assembly that resulted in the promulgation of the 1979 Constitution.

Vis-a-vis, making education in Nigeria his paramount obligation, not just for his fancy, but to the beauty of the country at large. Ombudsman was on check duties against incompetency and low work rate in the public sector. Obasanjo's administration was a beauty for the enclave, which was graced more through the utilization of youth enforcement and empowerment.

Moreover, Obasanjo administration paved way for Nigeria to negotiate for debt relief from her creditors. Nigeria received an entire debt relief amounting to $18 billion, or a 60 percent write off in return for a $12.4 billion repayment of arrears and buyback. Despite the achievement recorded by his administration, the failure by successive administrations to address the problems of integrity and accountability gap has plunged the nation into a new wave of debts, both internal and external.

Obasanjo established the EFCC and ICPC and also strengthened the Code of Conduct Bureau to fight corruption in Nigeria. Criminals, from top politicians like Tafa Balogun, Bode George to swindlers and internet fraudsters have been sent to jail by these agencies.

Foreign reserve when Obasanjo came into power was just $2 billion in 1999. But when he was leaving office by 2007, foreign reserve was a whooping $43 billion.

He secured an $18 billion debt relief from the Paris and London clubs and got Nigeria free of debt

Obasanjo brought in mobile telecommunications (GSM) into Nigerian which arguably has been the greatest achievement by any Nigerian leader.

Obasanjo discovered people like Charles Soludo, Okonjo Iweala whose contributions to national and economic development cannot be overemphasized.

Obasanjo launched Nigeria's first satellite in space, Nigeria Satellite 1 which ensured good internet and mobile communication.

Obasanjo ensured the dramatic development of Abuja under Mallam Nasir El Rufai as ministers with the Abuja Masterplan.

Finally, I wouldn't know better how the best ever Nigerian President should look like, if not like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, citing his abilities and capabilities and capacities which brought about his many achievements
