The Federal government
has said that the administration of President Buhari is fully aware of the recent arrest of former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in London by the United Kingdom Authorities.
The Presidency has also confirmed
the arrest of four other individuals
along side the former Minister and
has stated that there is a corroborative effort between the two governments on the matter.
According to the Senior Special
Assistant to the President, Garba
Shehu, “The government is aware of the arrest and all the government investigative agencies are working very closely with the British law enforcement.”
“Nigerian authorities are saying for
the first time that matters are being
handled with seriousness and deep
commitment. Nobody wants to give
the impression that this government is frivolous and unserious.
“For this reason, government is only
confirming active collaboration.
Beyond this, we are not saying more. In due course, Nigerians will be briefed on updates as appropriate.”
Diezani was arrested earlier on
Friday, last week on allegations of
bribery and money laundery. She has however, been released on bail and barred from leaving the shores of UK. The UK authorities had withheld her travel documents and that of those arrested with her until further notice, a source close to the investigation confirmed.
Mr. Shehu has failed to divulge the
names of the four individuals
arrested along side with former
Petroleum Minister. As he stated, he is not “willing to provide further
details at this point.”
